Commander Abhilash Tomy

It gives me a great pride in remembering that 15th Day of Jan 2017, when I met this great person in Lavasa.I was there on a official workshop where Abhilash sir was invited as chief guest. I was completely unaware of this personality before I heard him giving the speech and telling about circum navigation of the world ( earth ).

Commander Abhilash Tomy is an s an Indian naval officer and yachtsman. In 2013, he became the first Indian to complete a solo, un assisted, non-stop circumnavigation of the globe on INSV Mhadei. He also competed in the 2018 Golden Globe Race. What a phenomenal achievements when you are just 40s and still going for greater heights. I just don’t have enough words to express my feelings. He is not a ordinary soldier, he is champion sailor, decorated Naval officer and he is a ultimate survivor. To me Abhilash Tomy is no less than a miracle. That miracle would not have been possible with his unimaginable courage, perseverance and never say Die Spirit. You can imagine how I must have felt when I literally met him and heard him about his solo, un assisted, non-stop circumnavigation of the globe.... I just feel it was a great moment of my life and feel honoured to have photograph with him.....marvellous!!

I keep following him on Facebook, and later learnt he got retired from Indian Navy recently in the month of January. When I read the news of his pre-mature retirement, i was bit thinking what Is the reason for his early retirement. Upon little bit of reading the newspaper, I learnt that he has retired as he wants to concentrate on Golden Globe race 2022. I just felt and understood the meaning of passion. This person who has done the circum navigation twice is gearing up for yet another one...It just simply tells how much passionate he is for sailing and he is indeed a great yatchman. Hats off to you sir.

As many times I come across the above pic on my fb page, I remember one mythological story. The story is about lord Ganesha and Shanmukha. Its a famous story where every Indian knows about it. However, I just feel I will repeat it here as it has got direct relation to Commander Abhilash Tomy sir.

The charming story of two brothers Ganesha and Karthikey. One day, sage Narada visited Shiva on Mount Kailash and gave him a mango. Now this was not an ordinary mango but a special one given to him by Lord Brahma. The one who ate it would gain knowledge and wisdom. Now Lord Shiva was in a predicament. Which of his two sons should he give the mango to? After consulting with Parvati, he decided to hold a competition between the two boys and make the mango the prize. Both boys were eager to win the mango. So what was the Challenge?

Whoever circled the world thrice would win and get the mango fruit, so that he becomes most knowledgeable and gain all the wisdom. This put Ganesha in a quandary as he was a plump boy and his vehicle was a mouse. How was he going to win over the faster peacock, his brother Kartikeya’s vehicle? Besides, his brother was known for his active go-getting ways.

Kartikeya didn’t waste any time on thought. He jumped on to his peacock and zoomed off before anyone could even blink. But, at certain points, he thought he saw his brother’s rotund figure ahead of him. But it was too fleeting a glimpse for him to be sure so he continued on his way.

In the meantime, back on Mount Kailash, Ganesha called his parents and asked them to sit together. Then he folded his hands and walked around them thrice.

“Now give me the mango,” he said.

Shiva and Parvati looked at him in surprise. “Give you the mango?” they asked. “But you haven’t fulfilled the terms of the competition.”

Ganesha’s eyes twinkled, as he replied, “As my parents, you are the world to me; so when I went around you thrice, it was equal to going round the world.” Pleased with his wit, Shiva and Parvati handed over the mango.

Why I am telling this story here. We all know Ganesha is smart and he won the race and got the mango. But I was just wondering how lord Karthikeya has taken 3 rounds of globe. So far I was thinking its only possible by god. Now after meeting and knowing Abhilash sir, he has done the circum navigation twice and now going for the third one in 2022, I will consider him to have supreme power and can achieve impossible and he is true living miracle.

Hats off to you Sir. I wish I will meet again in this life.
